Boriana Dimitrova was born and raised in Sofia. She began her piano tuition at the age of four, followed by oboe and saxophone lessons. In 1988 she graduated with distinction from the Pancho Vladigerov
State Music Academy. In 2004 she founded the Boriana Dimitrova Trio, with which she had successful performances in Germany.
In 2008 she again graduated with distinction from the Hamburg University of Music & Performing Arts, qualifying in jazz saxophone and flute. The Boriana Dimitrova Quartet was founded in early 2007. In late 2007 their CD Balkan Blues was released. Takes an active part in musical life in Germany: Jazz Club Birdland, Jazz Club Stellwerk, Jazz Club Foolsgarden, Jazz Club B flat, Hamburg Jazz Open Festival, etc.
Boriana’s music is an intriguing fusion of jazz and elements of Bulgarian music folklore. Her own compositions abound in irregular rhythms, typical of Bulgarian folk music, skilfully combined with modern jazz trends. Her compositions are deceptively light, lyrical melodies of bass and drum rhythms, reminiscent of the Bulgarian folk instruments kaval and bagpipe. Thanks to being exceptional instrumentalists with an amazing range, the members of the quartet aptly integrate diverse music components, producing high-class jazz.
