The main activity of the Big Band of Bulgarian National Radio is to realise recordings for the radio’s music fund.
Since its creation in 1960, the Big Band has recorded over 1,000 pop and jazz pieces of Bulgarian and foreign authors. Many of its concerts have been aired live on television. In the period 1962 – 1966 the well-known jazz pianist and composer Milcho Leviev was conductor of the Big Band.
The orchestra is winner of a gold medal from the Festival in Helsinki in 1962. For a period of 35 years the band was led by Vili Kazasian (1934-2008), under whose baton the musicians enjoyed a busy concert life, taking part in a number of Bulgarian and international forums – The Golden Orpheus, Melody of the Year, etc.
In the period 1998-2010 the Big Band was headed by Yanko Miladinov – composer, pianist and conductor. He renewed the repertoire and organised the concerts Revelations, in which Bulgaria’s young pop and jazz talents had the chance to perform as soloists. Since 2010 the Big Band’s conductor is Antoni Donchev – pianist and composer.
