Big Band Saransk was formed especially for participation in the international jazz festival Veyse Jazz in 2005.
Its name in the local language loosely means “Jazz Together”. The festival evolved into a representative forum and the Big Band became its main orchestra.
The band leader and conductor is trombone player and pianist Alexander Kurin – the author of a number of original compositions. Over the years the festival bill has featured practically all prominent Russian jazz musicians, as well as wellknown performers from 17 countries. In 2010 Big Band Saransk was distinguished by the President of the Russian Federation for the creation of an ethno jazz project.
The musical background comes from the works of composers from the Ugro-Finnic regions. The project scored success within the framework of the tour “Jazz in the Centres of the Ugro-Finnic diasporas along the River Volga”. The band’s repertoire includes classical jazz pieces, dance music, instrumental and vocal hits from different genres. The orchestra soloists have won prizes at national and international contests. The band’s vocalists are Oxana Glebova and Sergei Semyonov.
